What do the first few sessions of couples therapy look like?
We do everything we can to make this important step inviting and comfortable. The quality of the relationship you develop with your therapist is a critical part of successful therapy, so we focus on getting to know you and letting you get to know us. We’ll ask a lot of questions, do a lot of listening, and as we become more familiar with your relationship, offer ideas for areas of therapeutic focus. Our intention is to create an environment where you and your partner feel safe and supported to do the work you came to do.
What’s different about the Madison Marriage and Couples Center?
Our Center focuses on what’s most important to you: the most vital relationship in your life. Our therapists specialize in relationships and have the expertise needed to successfully treat the wide variety of relationships that we see. Couples work isn’t a side gig for us—it’s what we do. And when so much is at stake, you’ll want therapists who understand the complex nature of relationships and who understand the nuance required to help you move out of old dynamics and into a more connected and satisfying life together.
How often will we meet?
Therapy is most effective when done in a consistent manner, so most often sessions are once weekly or twice per month. That said, we know schedules and other factors can play into the decision as well and we are flexible to find a schedule that works for you.
Do you offer virtual couples therapy?
Yes! Our platform is HIPPA compliant, super easy to use, and allows busy partners to be in different locations for the session. Check out our online therapy page or contact us to schedule an appointment today.
What is an LMFT?
LMFT stands for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Becoming an LMFT in Wisconsin is a rigorous process that requires a masters degree in counseling psychology, several thousand hours of supervised training focusing on family/couple relationships, as well as ongoing education in the field throughout the therapist’s career. In short, LMFTs are highly trained mental health clinicians who specialize in relationships.
What are the benefits of private pay?
At the Madison Marriage and Couples Center, you are in control of your therapy, your information is private, and your therapist is focused on you. We believe in the work our therapists do, so we as a center prioritize allowing our therapists to maintain their independence as professionals so that they can provide the best service possible to you.
We don’t take insurance. It generally does not cover couples counseling, it requires a mental health diagnosis, and it subjects your treatment decisions to a third party. We believe we offer a more direct, simpler approach to counseling.
